The thesis, entitled “Points of Agreement and Disagreement between Fakhr al-Din al-Razi (d. 606 AH) and al-Qurtubi (d. 671 AH) in Their Interpretation of Surah Al-Kahf: Collection and Analytical Study,” was defended in the Central Hall of the College of Islamic Sciences.
The examination committee consisted of the following professors:
• Professor Dr. Mahmoud Abdul Sattar Shallal — Chairperson
• Professor Dr. Muhannad Mohammed Saleh — Member
• Associate Professor Dr. Junaid Mahmoud Jasim — Member
• Professor Dr. Hassan Ibrahim Abdul — Member and Supervisor
Objectives of the Thesis:
This study seeks to identify and examine the issues of agreement and disagreement between the two eminent scholars, Fakhr al-Din al-Razi and al-Qurtubi, in their exegesis of the Holy Qur’an concerning Surah Al-Kahf, through a comparative analytical approach.
Major Findings:
The thesis arrived at several findings, the most significant of which are that both exegetes largely agree regarding the objectives of the Qur’anic text, the occasions of revelation, and the transmitted narrations. However, they differ in their interpretive methodologies and approaches. Al-Razi’s exegesis is predominantly characterized by its philosophical and theological orientation, his treatment of ambiguous expressions, and his extensive discussion and refutation of doctrinal arguments. In contrast, al-Qurtubi’s exegesis is distinguished by its jurisprudential and linguistic focus, as he derives practical legal rulings from Qur’anic verses and pays considerable attention to Qur’anic grammar, variant readings, and poetic evidence.
Following an extensive discussion of the thesis by the examination committee, the thesis was approved and awarded the grade of Pass.
