“Cases Permissible with Two Grammatical Analyses in Al-Dusuqi’s Marginalia (d. 1230 AH) on Mughni al-Labib by Ibn Hisham (d. 761 AH) – A Grammatical Study.”
The defense took place at the Central Hall of the College of Islamic Sciences.
The examination committee consisted of the following professors:
- Prof. Dr. Mohammed Hadi Mohammed – Chair
- Prof. Dr. Atheer Tareq Nouman – Member
- Prof. Dr. Mahmoud Suleiman Alawi – Member
- Prof. Dr. Abdulrazzaq Ali Hussein – Member and Supervisor
Thesis Objectives:
This thesis aims to study the phenomenon of multiple grammatical analyses (i‘rāb) within a single issue, which is one of the phenomena of Arabic grammar. It also seeks to clarify the cases permissible with two analyses in Al-Dusuqi’s marginalia on Mughni al-Labib, present the various grammatical opinions, and explain the reasons behind the multiplicity of grammatical possibilities.
Main Findings:
The study showed that the Qur’an, with its multiple canonical readings, was one of the main reasons that allowed grammarians to validate two or more grammatical possibilities by interpreting the Qur’anic verses through these readings. It also demonstrated that Al-Dusuqi, in most cases, presented the scholars’ opinions impartially, while rejecting what he deemed weak.
After an in-depth discussion by the committee members, the thesis was accepted with the grade of “Fulfilled”.
