Master’s Thesis Defense

Discussion of a master’s thesis on narrations deemed weak by Ibn ʿAqīl

Under the patronage of the President of the University of Fallujah, Prof. Dr. Ahmed Suleiman Hamad, and under the supervision and follow-up of the Dean of the College of Islamic Sciences, Prof. Dr. Mohammed Jassim Abdul, the public defense of the master’s thesis submitted by the graduate student (Shahad Hussein Khalifa) from the Department of Arabic Language – College of Islamic Sciences / University of Fallujah, was held on the morning of Tuesday, 22/12/2025.
The thesis was entitled:

“What Ibn ʿAqīl (d. 769 AH) Deemed Weak in His Book Al-Musāʿid ʿalā Tashīl al-Fawāʾid: A Morphological and Syntactic Study.”

The defense took place in the Central Hall of the College of Islamic Sciences.

The examination committee consisted of the following professors:

  • Prof. Dr. Mohammed Abdul Dhiab – Chair
  • Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmed Khaled Mahmoud – Member
  • Asst. Prof. Dr. Saad Sabbār Abdulbaqi – Member
  • Prof. Dr. Mohammed Khaled Rahhal – Member and Supervisor

Objectives of the Thesis:
This thesis aims to compile and study the grammatical and morphological issues that the grammarian Ibn ʿAqīl considered weak in his book Al-Musāʿid ʿalā Tashīl al-Fawāʾid.

Key Findings:
The study reached several results, the most notable of which is that the issues deemed weak by the grammarian Ibn ʿAqīl are diverse: in some cases, he presents views unique to himself, while in others he agrees with the opinions of earlier grammarians and morphologists.

After an extensive discussion of the thesis by the examination committee, the thesis was approved with a grade of “Satisfactory.”
