Master’s Thesis Defense on the Grammatical Semantics of Ibn Iyyaz
Under the patronage of the President of the University of Fallujah, Prof. Dr. Ahmed Suleiman Hamad, and under the supervision and follow-up of the Dean of the College of Islamic Sciences, Prof. Dr. Mohammed Jassim Abdul, the public defense of the Master’s student Mustafa Qusay Saleh, Department of Arabic Language – College of Islamic Sciences / University of Fallujah, was held on the morning of Wednesday, 20/8/2025, for his thesis entitled:
“Grammatical Semantics in Ibn Iyyaz (d. 681 AH) in His Book Qawāʿid al-Muṭāraḥa”
The defense took place in the Central Hall of the College of Islamic Sciences.
The examination committee consisted of the following esteemed professors:
- Prof. Dr. Mohammed Hadi Mohammed – Chair
- Prof. Dr. Mahmoud Suleiman Alawi – Member
- Asst. Prof. Dr. Wissam Najm Abdullah – Member
- Prof. Dr. Abdulrazzaq Ali Hussein – Member and Supervisor
Objectives of the Thesis:
This thesis aims to reveal the features of grammatical semantics in the work of Ibn Iyyaz al-Baghdadi in his book Qawāʿid al-Muṭāraḥa. It highlights his contribution to linking grammatical structure with meaning and positions him within the grammatical and semantic trends of the Arabic linguistic heritage.
Findings of the Study:
The thesis reached several important findings, the most significant of which is that Ibn Iyyaz considered meaning a fundamental basis in guiding grammatical judgments. He often preferred the syntactic analysis that best aligns with meaning, while emphasizing the vital role of contextual indicators in determining meaning and directing grammatical interpretation.
Following the extensive deliberations of the examining committee, the thesis was approved with a grade of “Pass with Fulfillment.”
