Master’s Thesis Defense on Binary Oppositions in the Poetry of al-Hājarī
Under the patronage of the President of the University of Fallujah, Prof. Dr. Ahmed Suleiman Hamad, and under the supervision and follow-up of the Dean of the College of Islamic Sciences, Prof. Dr. Mohammed Jasim Abd, the public defense of the Master’s thesis of the student (Du‘aa Abdul Sattar Wasmi) from the Department of Arabic Language – College of Islamic Sciences / University of Fallujah, was held on Monday morning, 16/2/2026. The thesis was entitled: “Binary Oppositions in the Poetry of al-Hājarī (d. 632 AH)” and took place in the central hall of the College of Islamic Sciences.
The examination committee consisted of the following professors:
- Prof. Dr. Muzaffar Hashim Abdulmajid – Chair
- Prof. Dr. Bashar Khalaf Abboud – Member
- Assist. Prof. Dr. Alaa Abdulwahab Abdulrazzaq – Member
- Prof. Dr. Khalid Saadi Ismail – Member and Supervisor
Thesis Objectives:
This thesis aims to identify and analyze the binary oppositions in the collected works of the poet al-Hājarī in order to uncover the aesthetic dimensions of the creative text, clarify their role in shaping poetic imagery, and explore the fundamental inner conflicts they reflect within the human psyche, in addition to highlighting the aesthetics that arise from contrast and tension between the two poles of each binary opposition.
Key Findings:
The study reached several conclusions, most notably that al-Hājarī’s poetry includes numerous binary oppositions that vary between psychological, social, intellectual, ethical, and other forms of contrasting pairs.
After an extensive discussion by the members of the examination committee, the thesis was approved with the grade of “Pass.”
